                                                TRAP

I don't really fall
in love
With anyone
Rarely I do.

It's true
That I like people.
But love?
It takes a little more.

So, I don't love.

But, in your case,
I guess
I did.

Or you could say;
I could have fallen for you.
There was a chance.

Usually, you'd find me
Avoiding such risks,
For I'm a man,free,
I escape responsibilty,
And, I run away.

But in your case,
I guess
I did stay.

And may be I waited,
Or perhaps counted
Days and months,patiently,
While the smell of your hair,
And the touch of your hands,
And the kiss of your lips
Lingered in my thoughts.

And often i forget
All of that.
But in your case,
I guess I coulldn't
I guess
I have not.

CONFRONTATION WITH GOD

I spent my days wandering over the green mountains
And at nights I return to my room
to sleep by the cliff.
Listening to the sweet gurgling of the stream.

**********************

The mountain and the valley
are already in deep slumber.
The valley got lighted
by nothing but the moonlight.
And the moon got fragmented
Into pieces on the flowing water…
No signs  of civilization
Not even traces in the horizon..

There in  the lap of the mountains
On that  cold night
Above the vivacious stream
I experienced you..

The gigantic iron bridge got lit up by the moonlight..
And something surreal happened…

I looked up at the sky
I saw you smiling.
But no longer you frown me
Nor sympathize me
You want me to come to you
You want me to unite with you....

THESE ARE SOME STILLS FROM OUR TOUR...

    FOR YOU

What stories the heart has woven,
only another heart should hear them.

Slowly, slowly,we enter the misty atmospheres of love.
The shadows of the blue clouds of the dream are deep indeed.
You and I are both lost
Beholding dreams,sleeping or walking
Hushed and amazed...

Its as if sparks flow through my veins, from my head to the feet.
My wits are light and refreshed.
But its as if nothing is under my control now.......

                             ANIMAL INSTINCTS

Today, I watched a Tamil movie named "Pithamagan",(national award winning movie) suggested by my brother long back. I watched the movie in youtube - neither a dubbed hindi version nor any subtitles and Tamil is as unknown to me as any African language. (Though I believe subtitles have always failed to carry the essence of emotions intended to be shown.) But did I need subtitles for watching this movie? When the protagonist(Vikram) hardly says a word; all his utterings are growls.

STORYLINE:  An unclaimed child raised by the caretaker of a graveyard grows up to be autistic. With minimal human contact and growing up among the corpses he growls like a wolf, runs like a gorilla has the unkempt appearnce of an orangutan but he seems to understand loyalty and despite his circumstance, a social animal. Driven by circumstances he goes out into the human society and finds a shelter
For me, the favourite scene of the movie is the climax- where Chithan (a social outcast) sinks his teeth into the neck of the druglord ; who has killed his master. When he draws blood from the druglord's neck, watch out for his expressions. Teary eyes- beaming with victory and vengeance but when he looks into the eyes of his master's sister (his lady love) his expression changes dramatically. His eyes still filled with tears  express "abhimaan" ( I am unable to find a suitable synonym for this emotion. I wonder how people speaking English express this sentiment.) Then he turns back, returns to the graveyard to be among the corpses ignoring his lover's  call for return.

                                        MUSICAL GENIUS FROM ODISHA

Akshaya Mohanty was unarguably the greatest musical genius that Odisha have ever produced. The man was well ahead of his time in terms of creativity and versatility. In a state like Odisha whose film and music industry was  still at a juvenile stage,  taking  music as a full time career option and setting new trends as he had done; is definitely an arduous task.  Also in an impoverished state where chaste Odia is spoken in the coastal and central districts and where the number of audience is very small , there he had not only made a living out of music but also set new bench marks and made Odia music popular across the country. A singer, song writer and a music director - he accomplished all his jobs proficiently. A man deep-rooted in his culture - he revamped and popularized many Odia classics like "Patent Medicine", "Kanchi Abhijana" etc. He was also a proud katki. (as the people of Cuttack fondly call themselves) -his songs showcased the war of kites on the banks of Kathajodi , the sahis of cuttack during Durga puja and various other aspects  of this thousand-year-old city. The use of colloquial language and folk songs was very common in his creations. As a person he was uncomplicated and carefree and that was definitely reflected in his music. He definitely boosts our self-respect and makes us as an Odia proud.  He had written so many great lyrics from " he phaguna tume" to "mu danda balunga" from "ae je banalata pahada" to "ja re bhasi bhasi ja" - and his songs appealed to people from all stratas.
It is very unfortunate that the newer generation of music directors and songwriters have hardly been able to  carry on his outstanding legacy.
Many of his compositions are close to my heart- but his 'jajabara' song is my favourite.
I have tried to translate this song in English.
                                        .....HAPPY READING.....

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

A wanderer -my soul
And limiltless are it's ambitions.
I make and break, each day
those houses of dreams.

 I am the light myself,
And my shadow is my only friend.
I write and burn, each day
the story of my heart...

I am the lover of these endless horizons,
Mirage, beloved are all mine..
Love and betrayal
are my everyday game...

A wanderer - my soul
And limitless are its ambitions...

                                                    ENDLESS ROADS

I went on wandering o' road
As I always found a new one
Some lent me a hand and dragged me to them...
And some chased me even they are

                                               Wandering and wandering,
One day I reached a city where
                                         "illusion" and "salvation" resided.
                                              Both of them tempted much,
All dressed up waiting at their doorways
                                               to embrace the travelers.

Some rolling in those endless circles of
                                             " illusion" of "salvation" .
                                             Some beating loud drums of
                                            "salvation" from "illusion" .
                                             I failed to understand both....

                                                How come I know,
That one complimented the existence of another.
Soon I left behind the city of  "illusion" and "salvation".

THOUGHTS ON INDEPENDENCE DAY:

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depths of truth
where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever widening thought and action
into that heaven of freedom, my father let my country awake.....
      -RABINDRANATH TAGORE

These powerful words of Rabindra nath Tagore have not lost their significance even 70 years have elapsed since independence.Women are unsafe outside-Freedom of speech is in jeopardy- Society broken into segments on the basis of caste and religion.

Well-let me dive into depths of time
And bring out the ages, that have rolled.
A few small fragments of these wrecks sublime
Which human eye may never more behold...

-HENRY LOUIS VIVIAN DEROZIO

So in remembrance with those great freedom fighters of India who have sacrificed their lives for achieving this Independence we should unite and pledge for a better India. We should rethink and reassesss our position and strive to remove all the hinderances in our path in acheiving that "heaven of freedom".

On this Independence day,I wish that we break ourselves from these draconian notions and strive forward towards making India a land of opportunities, a hub where people from all over the worldwould come to live and learn.

                                                    A DREAM

Last night I  woke up to  a nightmare,
                            My face wet with sweat,
                          My heart thumping with fear...

                        The night outside my window
                           was all quiet and tranquil.
                      The all pervading peace broken
                  occasionally by the ominous barking
                              of the street dogs.

But the street outside was not familiar,
The painting on the wall was missing,
A resplendent wall clock replaced it.

                             Suddenly my heart chocked
As I see the shadow of a woman veiled,
                                 But when I  turn about,
no where I find that woman.
                               Through his face not seen,
But with the lines of the shadow,
I draw the contours of her body.

Soon I start following the shadow,
                         growing restless to her face.
Like the golden deer, like a mirage..
                              She swiftly runs.
Like an insane lover, I follow her.

                            All of a sudden,
                             she stopped
And with a seductive giggle of hers.
                             She turns back,
with a gust of wind her veil flows away

                             I saw her face
                           And with a shock,
                           My dream broke....

                                            FREE FALL

                  Those wild and unmixed joy,
                  Those raw sensuous pleasures,
                  Those mindless indulgences,
                    And those slippery paths.

                 The shrill thrill of falling
                       down and down,
                       Nothing above,
                       Nothing below,
                  Just that present state,
                         You are lost,
Intoxicated by the sheer  thrill of falling.

And with the assistance of gravity soon you reach the bottom.
Almost in a crash, with a loud thud you are on the ground....

That is a pit-a dark pit
                       It frightens you
You start clawing out of it
But alas! " climbing ain't that easy."

                                                           YOU AND BAIRAG

You are that force of gravity
                                                   that drags me downward
                                                   to all those things worldly...

You are that thread of desire
                                                         that connects me
                                                     to the maze of ambitions...

                                                          Without you,
                                                  I would have long vanished
                                                        into thin air,
bereft of my existence, my desires..
                                                 I would be a dead-pessimist
drowning in the pool of "bairag"

                                                 Those dreams that you have
                                                    sown deep in my heart,
                                             sometimes yearn for their fulfilment.

my fears

                                                     MY FEARS

Gusts of cool breeze rushed in as i opened the window
in a February evening.......
I trembled in apprehension
And shut down the window
As soon as possible
And switched on the air conditioners,
Soon my nerves seemed to calm down.

Last night as i crossed the streets,
A man standing by the road(waiting for his bus most probably)
Looked into my eyes
And i have a shiver down my spine,
His eyes were bloodshot,
And a strange old unknown fear crept into me.
I fled from there as fast as i can,
Came to my room; bolted all the doors and windows,
Shoved in an earphone inside my ears,
Soon i got over that fear.

Those cold metallic railings,
Those lifeless electronic gadgets
 are my sole companions.
They seem to reciprocate my emotions.

The young boy across the street
The woman in my neighbours
All seem to spy on me..
Even that lizard on the wall with his
uniocular gaze constantly on me
makes me escape his vision.
All those creatures living around
invoke suspicion in me.

DRIVING INSPIRATION

Loneliness and too much time for introspection led me to organize all my scribblings into a blogspot. I have been a thorough nature-lover from my childhood , nurtured with the poems of Wordsworth, Hardy,Neruda; i have developed an affinity towards literature.  Photography and travelling of late has become my favourite pastime. So i have included also some photographs which i have taken during travelling.
Hope you guys enjoy..and share your valuable comments..!!

IK BAGAL MEIN CHAND HOGA AUR IK BAGAL MEIN ROTIYAN..

WHEN I FIRST HEARD THE SONG WHILE WATCHING THE MOVIE "GANGS OF WASSEYPUR" THERE WAS A STRANGE PATHOS IN THE MUSIC AND THE LYRICS WAS NOT THAT AUDIBLE...AND THE SONG WAS REDUCED TO FEW SECONDS IN THE MOVIE....SO I DID NOT PAY MUCH ATTENTION..BUT THE SONG LINGERED IN MY MEMORY.
AND LATER I CAME TO KNOW THAT THE LYRICS HAS BEEN PENNED BY PIYUSH MISHRA.. THEN I FOUND THE LYRICS...SUCH AWESOME POETRY..SUCH SUBTLETIES...

THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE SONG:
There will moon on one side and bread on the other,
there will be sleep on one side and lullabies on the other,
I'll put the sheet of bread on the moon and sleep
and will tell sleep that I'd come the next day to sing the lullaby..
There will be jingling shells on a side,
there will be some sobs, making you cry,
we'll get filled in the shells, and go n touch all the stars
And tickle the sobs to cajole them..
O mother, someone will come to cry on your sobs..
someone will come to cry..
don't be sad, that who comes will not go back again..
he'll never go back..
but remember, you won't bring anything improbable (anything that would affect my work)
and if you bring, the story will be altogether different..
(actually) who cares for probable or improbable/good or bad..
at the maximum I'll die here only..
I'll get up, proving the death a dream,
and will poke fun at the probable and go laughing

THE CONFLICT

THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE POEMS OF RABINDRANATH TAGORE TRANSLATED BY SOMEONE ELSE ; BUT I CAN NOT RESIST THE TEMPTATION OF POSTING IT.
I have only added a title and preface to this beautiful poem.
The poem is about a child who suffers self-conflict when he comes to the realisation that if he gives into his curiosity and ventures out to discover the world, he will have to do so at the cost of his mother's warmth. Similarly, were he to choose his mother's warmth and affection, he will miss out on the adventures he could have.

THE CONFLICT:

Mother, the folk who live up in the clouds call out to me-
"We play from the time we wake till the day ends.
We play with the golden dawn, we play with the silver moon."
I ask, "But how am I to get up to you ?"
They answer, "Come to the edge of the earth, lift up your
hands to the sky, and you will be taken up into the clouds."
"My mother is waiting for me at home, "I say, "How can I leave
her and come?"
Then they smile and float away.
But I know a nicer game than that, mother.
I shall be the cloud and you the moon.
I shall cover you with both my hands, and our house-top will
be the blue sky.
The folk who live in the waves call out to me-
"We sing from morning till night; on and on we travel and know
not where we pass."
I ask, "But how am I to join you?"
They tell me, "Come to the edge of the shore and stand with
your eyes tight shut, and you will be carried out upon the waves."
I say, "My mother always wants me at home -
how can I leave her and go?"
They smile, dance and pass by.
But I know a better game than that.
I will be the waves and you will be a strange shore.
I shall roll on and on and on, and break upon your lap with
laughter.
And no one in the world will know where we both are...

SEA-BOUNDLESS

A sea is a riddle that i have always failed to solve,
Those turbulent waves hitting the shores-
what does they want to convey?
Their suprressed miseries or tales from the distant lands..
I can't find out.
May be they are telling us about the upsurge of the marine animals,
The revolution they are conspiring against us,
So they are violent.
But sometimes they seem to be celebrating
joyous and pompous, running up and down,
as if telling us that a new king has been throned in the ocean.
Whatever it may be,
But what I like about them is their spirit-wild and untamed.
They never cared for the  conventional ways of ours,
Never understood the rhythm and symphony of our life.....!!!

SUCH CALMNESS AND SERENITY PERVADES HERE...
THE PEOPLE AND THE PLACE  ARE HARDLY AFFECTED BY THE MADDENING CROWD AND THE WORLD AROUND THEM...
THE PLACE WHERE EVERLASTING PEACE LIVES...
THIS IS MY NATIVE PLACE.
SUCH A PLEASANT RESPITE WHEN I GO BACK TO MY VILLAGE..!!

#going back to the roots

A JOURNEY INTO UNKNOWN

   A JOURNEY INTO UNKNOWN:

Sitting on a rock nearby  the stream,
In silence listening to its rhythym,
Watching the pebbles blue, red and white,
I discover peace in cool waters of it.

A strange sort of silence prevails,
As those in the primeval times,
Those blue sky and nature's bounties,
Adding to the sylvan beauties,
Hypnotized me.

Those boulders gigantic,
perched above the cliffs
like ancient strange motifs,
haunted me.

Those deep and dense jungles,
like unsolved riddles
fascinated me.

I lie there motionless...
My obsession with reality washed off with the cold water of the stream.

A lot more to explore...
A lot lies beyond the vision of my naked eye,
And form there on, I ventured out into that world of unseen and unknown......

TIME TRAVELLER

Covered with mist,
Clad in cloud,
We saw the heaven beneath the sky...
 Beyond the 'Debsabha'
the sky glittered with multiple hues....
The sun came out large and round,
Making the eastern sky crimson and red.

Watching the sky,
below our feet,
We stood motionless,
Trying in vain to hold back the time.

The birthplace of Sita,
Valmiki's cave and all places prehistoric,
Took us back to the age of epics...

Like in a flight of fantasy,
Like sitting on a time machine,
We wind back to the eras gone by..
