                             ANIMAL INSTINCTS

Today, I watched a Tamil movie named "Pithamagan",(national award winning movie) suggested by my brother long back. I watched the movie in youtube - neither a dubbed hindi version nor any subtitles and Tamil is as unknown to me as any African language. (Though I believe subtitles have always failed to carry the essence of emotions intended to be shown.) But did I need subtitles for watching this movie? When the protagonist(Vikram) hardly says a word; all his utterings are growls.

STORYLINE:  An unclaimed child raised by the caretaker of a graveyard grows up to be autistic. With minimal human contact and growing up among the corpses he growls like a wolf, runs like a gorilla has the unkempt appearnce of an orangutan but he seems to understand loyalty and despite his circumstance, a social animal. Driven by circumstances he goes out into the human society and finds a shelter
For me, the favourite scene of the movie is the climax- where Chithan (a social outcast) sinks his teeth into the neck of the druglord ; who has killed his master. When he draws blood from the druglord's neck, watch out for his expressions. Teary eyes- beaming with victory and vengeance but when he looks into the eyes of his master's sister (his lady love) his expression changes dramatically. His eyes still filled with tears  express "abhimaan" ( I am unable to find a suitable synonym for this emotion. I wonder how people speaking English express this sentiment.) Then he turns back, returns to the graveyard to be among the corpses ignoring his lover's  call for return.
